In addition to the resources and information published through-out the magazine, there are thousands of directories and files to explore on this CD ROM.
The NautilusCD Disc Index is the standalone application that makes it possible to do so.
Click the Tools button found on the bottom of each page to open the Tools Palette, then select Index (as highlighted, above).
Search for any subject or item on the disc. Open it. Copy it to your hard drive. Print it. Or access the Index Help files for assistance (and more complete instructions).
Scroll through the Index at File or Directory level; see what's in each listing plus its path name and basic information such as type and size. Often there's a full description with important information on registration, upgrades and more.
Explore! The Index provides a world of capabilities not available in the magazine.

Subscriber Guide
Built into every NautilusCD disc is an electronic communications package we call Link. With it
--and your modem--you can connect with NautilusCD to send a subscription form, send comments or suggestions to the editors, seek technical support or order products.
You can open Link from the Tools Palette by clicking the Tools button at the bottom of any page, or from the Startup screen.
Many subscribers regularly send Link messages with comments and suggestions. We read every one, often making content decisions and even magazine enhancements because of them.
Each month we select a few to publish as Letters to the Editor. Turn the page to see this issue's collection, then send in your own.

EDITORIAL Q&A
Accessing Pages
NautilusCD desperately needs a way to get directly to a specific page without going through several steps. Right now, you have to try to guess the appearance of the page in the "Browse" movie, click one at a time (slowly) through the pages themselves or use the Index. Why not add a simple "Find" or "Go To" command?

TECHNICAL Q&A
Win OS/2 Works
Recently a customer wrote to NautilusCD saying that he was unable to use the product Version 2.0 under OS/2. The reply from NautilusCD was that the product does not work under OS/2.
With the assistance of a friend (who has OS/2), I tested the latest version of NautilusCD with Win OS/2 and found no problems. There are many factors that could cause the inability to use the product:
Is the multimedia presentation software installed correctly? Are all the drivers for the Windows session installed properly? There could be software conflicts, etc.
I just wanted to let you know you have a great product that does work under Win OS/2.

Technical Q&A continued...
WizManager Install
I tried to install WizManager from your CD but it wouldn't work. I then copied the files to a disc and renamed site_lic.wri to site-lic.wri, based on an error message I got from the installation program. I also removed the read-only attribute, but I don't think that was necessary to install the program. Now it seems to be working fine. Just wanted to pass on this info in case it might be of some help.

Each month NautilusCD chooses five shareware/freeware programs for your evaluation.
Sometimes these programs will carry a theme, and sometimes they'll simply be a mixture of items the editors think will be helpful to you. We welcome your recommendations, and we'll publish a column of user suggestions from time to time. Receive a NautilusCD souvenir if your suggestion is published!

This month we feature launch utilities. These utilities enhance your desktop by providing quick access to your most frequently used applications.
LAUNCHPAD
LaunchPad allows you to switch between any of your currently loaded applications or launch a new application with a single selection from a pop-up menu. LaunchPad is more convenient than Windows. It needs no
space on the desktop, but it is always instantly available!
DKLAUNCH
The purpose of this program is to launch up to six of your most commonly used applications quickly without searching through the Program Manager. This is not designed to take the place of the Program Manager in any way. In addition, DKLaunch allows you to customize icons for the six applications chosen.

Windows UnArchive (WUNA) is used to extract and decompress files from ZIP and ARJ format archives. It replaces both command-line DOS unarchivers and Windows-based front end programs for those utilities.
The NautilusCD Disc Index makes use of a custom version of WUNA to provide "built-in" unzipping.
If you choose to use it, be sure to register with the author.

We hope you never run into a virus, but just in case...
This section's collection of virus detection and removal utilities is provided for your convenience. Use these programs against viruses that may have already infected your system and to keep away new viruses.
In addition to software, we regularly publish a database of virus and anti-virus related information to help you determine what may be plaguing your system and what to do about it.
Note that all of the programs in this section are distributed in .ZIP format. "This is to ensure that the software is authentic and free of tampering," as McAfee Associates so aptly explains.

CLEAN-UP
Repair infected areas on your system with CLEAN-UP (CLEAN), a virus disinfection program for the IBM PC and compatibles.
VSHIELD
The best anti-virus defense is prevention. Use VSHIELD to
prevent a virus from infecting your IBM PC or compatible computer. VSHIELD searches the PC for known computer viruses in memory, the partition table, the boot sector, system files and itself. It then installs itself as a Terminate-and-Stay-Resident (TSR) program and scans all programs before allowing the system to execute them.
In addition, we've included virus detection and removal programs for networks and OS/2 machines.

Each NautilusCD article includes a variety of icons; each icon type opens or "expands" its multimedia story component.
Let's begin with text:
Graphics add a lot to a story.
When you see an image icon like the one on this cartoon, try it.
See? The Media Extension button expanded the picture!
Now, let's add sound. There are three types of audio: digitized sound files, CD tracks and MIDI.
And NautilusCD takes advantage of MPC's MIDI capability.

You'll see three more media types making use of "extension" buttons throughout an article:
When it's important that you have access to files or applications directly on the disc, look for this folder icon.
Occasionally you'll see an icon like the one below denoting a special Link form. You can open it, fill it out and use your modem to send it to us electronically.
(For more on the Link facility, see the Connect with NautilusCD article elsewhere in this Subscriber Guide department.)
Finally, digital video plays an increasingly important role in multimedia communications. To view movies within stories, just click the icon with the film strip on it.

With CHECKFREE you can pay virtually any bill to any company or individual in the United States electronically. After you enter whom you want to pay, the amount and date, CheckFree automatically records,
categorizes and sends the information to the CheckFree Processing Center via modem. Then, CheckFree completes your payments. Fixed amount payments--like your mortgage--can be set up so they're paid automatically.
In addition, CheckFree offers a complete personal financial package with record keeping and reporting functions.

THE INFORMATION EDGE
Online financial services used to mean stock quotes and little else. Today that's not true. Dow Jones Investor Network (DJIN) is a new kind of news service that brings video interviews, news conferences and other public forums directly to your computer's screen. The brain is an essential part of the central nervous system and is composed of a number of sub-systems: The hindbrain, the subcortical limbic system and the cerebral cortex.
The hindbrain is located at the very top of the spinal cord. It is responsible for the control of heart rate, breathing, swallowing and chewing. In addition, it controls your level of alertness. to this area is usually fatal. It should also be noted that this is the brain module whose activity is suppressed by an opiate drug overdose.
The subcortical limbic system forms a border (or limbus) around the brain stem and is responsible for basic motivational behaviors like feeding or fighting.
Changes in the limbic system can sometimes result in very aggressive behavior.
The cerebral cortex is the most complex part of the brain. This covering of the brain contains two hemispheres, the left and the right. Each side is responsible for the sensation and motor control of the opposite side of the body.

The primary somatosensory cortex receives most touch sensations and other information about the body. Damage to this rather narrow strip impairs perception of the opposite side of the body.
BRAIN DAMAGE
People suffering from damage to the right parietal cortex may actually begin to completely neglect their left side. They will read only the right side of a book page and may fail to dress or groom the left side of their
own bodies. Often, when asked, they will insist that their left side is "someone else."
The front part of the cerebral cortex both on the left and the right has to do with motor behavior, including language production. The back part has to do with language perception.
Therefore, damage to any particular area of the brain often results in alterations in language.
Next Time: Dr. Torello's examination of the human brain continues.

FM synthesis is dead. Gone the way of the 8-track tape, this once-popular game sound synthesizer has seen its last roundup.
Turtle Beach Systems is now shipping the Maui Wavetable Synthesizer Upgrade. Where FM synthesizers use one simple audio building block to make every conceivable sound, Maui's synthesis process uses actual digital recordings of real instruments.
Maui is designed so that owners of lower quality cards can add the benefits of wavetable synthesis and sampling capabilities to their existing solutions.

USING STOCKS TO BUILD A SECONDARY INCOME
Secondary income is money that comes from a source other than your job. Examples of this type of income include inheritances, money from rental property or investment dividends. If you're not named in a rich relative's will, make sure you have a good source of secondary income by applying the three rules for investment success when you purchase stock.

Your children will have a roaring good time with Animal Quest while they learn important lessons about the food chain and ecology.
The rules of the game are based on factual prey and predator relationships which are played out in three different habitats: northern forest, ocean and jungle. Children select which animal they would like to become, then roam their habitat, collecting as many energy tokens as they can while capturing prey, avoiding predators and outsmarting competitors.

PICTURE THIS!
Picture This! is more than just a great drawing program for kids. It teaches valuable computer skills as well, but because this program is made to be fun, children don't even realize they're learning to manipulate menus, use drag and drop technology, and improve their hand-eye coordination.
Picture This! comes with special drawing tools just for kids such as Grass, Birds, Sky, Land and Starbursts. It also includes a variety of special effects, erasers and rubber stamps that children can use to create their own scenes. Every feature is designed
so that an average 7- to 8-year-old child can figure out what to do. Both younger and older children will enjoy Picture This! as well.

Your brain is responsible for everything you do: Everything you experience, every sight, every sound, everything you think about represents the activity going on in your brain.
The nervous system, of which the brain is a part, is composed of about 100 billion cells. These special cells are called neurons. Tens of thousands of these cells interconnect to form complex networks, each responsible for the processing or control of specific bodily functions or actions.
The system is divided into two major parts: the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system.

INSTALLING TRUETYPE FONTS
To install your TrueType fonts, open the Control Panel in Program Manager, select Fonts and hit Add. Then select your font and press OK. Make sure the box labeled "Copy Fonts to Windows Directory" is checked. Otherwise, your computer will expect to get the font from the same floppy or CD ROM disc they were originally found on.

Jim Brickman's debut album No Words marks the first solo piano signing for Windham Hill in seven years. A fresh new face on the contemporary instrumental scene, Brickman's music adds a new twist to the genre while remaining firmly rooted in the traditional Windham Hill sound.

MIDI Connection: Brahms and Scriabin
section
Music & Sound
Desktop Media
Although obviously knowledgeable about the capabilities of the cello prior to this time, it is in Op. 99 that Brahms truly plumbs the depth of emotion and aspires to present the majesty of the instrument. While his earlier Sonata possessed bold, infectious melody and technical challenge, it seems unfulfilled and crude when held next to this month's feature.
The Sonata is a significant part of the cello literature and deserves its place as one of Brahms' greatest chamber efforts. We hope you enjoy the Sonata in F Major and look forward to hearing from you as to what we might offer on NautilusCD in the future.

MIDI Connection continued...
You will find the Sonata saved in individual movements, both as MasterTracks Pro5 files (.MTS) and standard MIDI files (.MID). We have taken the liberty of placing the arco and pizzicato parts in separate tracks to facilitate your channel mapping and patch assignment. As always, there is also a digitized audio performance of each movement, so that you can hear what the transcriber envisioned with regard to dynamics and articulation.

ALEXANDER SCRIABIN
This issue of NautilusCD continues with our series of Preludes by Scriabin, his Op. 11, Nos. 13-18. As always, Scriabin is full of surprises, odd meters and unique angular melodies; but as usual, this music manages to charm and entice with its Debussy-like delicacy and watercolor impressionism. For more of Scriabin's Op. 11 see Nautilus Vols. 2-12 and 3-2.

Hey. What can I say? More flowers. Blame it on those insistent NautilusCD editors who encouraged me to submit two months' worth of "weed" shots. Flower lovers.
(In case you haven't guessed by now, flowers are not my first love. See last month's issue for a full explanation!)

More Floral Delights by Jeff Morgan

These photographs were taken last July on a three-week trip to the U.K., as I visited family and friends. We spent one day at the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) headquarters in Wisley (county of Surrey), and these are some of my shots from that day. Actually, I shocked my relatives by not
complaining the whole time about flowers being "useless weeds" and "a poor excuse for vegetable matter." Instead I tried to make a negative into a positive (no pun intended!) and went to work getting shots I don't normally capture. Don't quote me on this, but I half enjoyed the day after all.

I'm afraid that even if I knew the names of some of these colorful specimens, I couldn't pronounce them. And, after all, they're only flowers. I hope they make good colorful backgrounds for you.
Remember, if you have any feedback or requests, I'm interested in hearing from you. Feel free to drop me a line on CompuServe at 71670,1743. (Botanical scientists need not reply!)

"But I already have a sound card installed! Why would I want to read this?" Good point. Chances are you will want to upgrade that 8-bit sound card in your PC, or
you will be called upon to do a favor for a friend who has watched enviously as you explored the world through CD ROMs like NautilusCD.

JOHANNES BRAHMS
During a summer holiday spent at Lake Thun, Austria, in 1886 Johannes Brahms composed several significant chamber works including the masterful Cello Sonata in F Major, Op. 99.
Comparing Brahms' second such effort for the instrument with his first, the Sonata in E Minor, Op. 38 (see Nautilus Vol. 3-1),written some 20 years earlier, reveals important differences. A study of these differences becomes a revealing expose in the maturing of a great master.
